Biography

Seattle attorney Shane Carew has practiced law for more than 40 years. He has tried cases to juries, the bench, and arbitrators. Shane has recovered tens of millions of dollars in settlements for his clients.

Shane attended the University of Notre Dame, earning a bachelor in business administration.  After Notre Dame, Shane attended Tulane University law school, graduating in 1980.  After practicing in Seattle with a boutique firm for a couple years, Shane then enrolled at University College in the University of London (U.K.), obtaining an LL.M. in maritime law, graduating in 1983.    While studying, he worked as an intern at Clyde & Co., and two marine insurance firms.  Shane returned to practice with a small firm and then a mid-size firm before launching his own law firm in 1992.   Shane has been named a "Super Lawyer" by Washington Law and Politics magazine. Shane was given the Certificate for Pro Bono Publico Service by the Washington State Bar Association for his continued service to the local community with their legal issues. He is peer rated AV Preeminent.

Drawn by the complexities of admiralty and maritime matters, for over 40 years, Shane has maintained a broad practice including wrongful death, personal injury to officers and crew, collisions, allisions, salvage, marina fires, Coast Guard license defense, preferred ship mortgages, maritime liens, vessel purchase and sale, and fishing rights disputes.  Shane carefully considers all approaches to a case.   He filed suit in Makah Tribal Court for a vessel collision, in what we were told was the Tribal Court’s first maritime case.  The case settled quickly.    In recent years, Shane has been drawn to another complex area of law --- plaintiff legal malpractice.  As a member of both the Washington and Alaska bars, Shane has tried cases in state and federal court in both states.  He has a successful appellate record with the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and has argued in state appellate courts in both Alaska and Washington.
